Is Your Homeschool High Tech?

What is “high tech”? I define high-tech as anything to do with the computer, internet and/or homeschool software. If you’re reading this, then you are at least high tech enough to have internet access. There was no internet twenty years ago. The average family did not own a home computer, lap top or even a cell phone. My how times have changed in just a short twenty years!

In 1997 when we first began homeschooling, we had only had the internet for maybe 2 years, the resources online were not near what they are today. So like many who began their homeschooling journey, we started out ‘doing school at home’. Textbooks, workbooks, etc… Nothing wrong with that, if that suits your child’s learning style. We even tried some of the earliest versions of Switched on Schoolhouse – probably one of the most popular homeschool software on the market, and have to admit – we didn’t like it much. Thankfully, not only has Switched on Schoolhouse improved, but so has our overall homeschool software options. There are dozens and dozens of truly wonderful and educational choices on the market today ranging from educational games, to actual homeschool software curriculum, to record-keeping and lesson planning. Now with wi-fi, families can be mobile and still do school. Awesome!

How much high tech to use High-tech homeschool may not suit every homeschool family. Nothing wrong with that. Some prefer to limit computer usage to just mom or dad and have the kids do more hands-on activities offline. Others, use homeschool software for only recreational games, or just for one or two classes in their homeschool, yet for others, their entire curriculum is comprised of homeschool software. Do what works for your family and is best suited to your child(rens) learning style.

Grades K-8 Math: Homeschool Software

This software is a bargain you can’t pass up and it’s packed full of learning.

Contains over 2500 interactive Lesson pages on basic math skills for grades K-8.
All Grades from Kindergarten through eighth are on one CD making the software valuable for years.
Each lesson has an explanation of the concept being studied, an unlimited number of practice problems are generated and several challenge games are available on each page
Immediate feedback prevents learning the wrong method by practicing it without immediate correction.

Immediate feedback prevents practicing and learning incorrect methods, which is a common result of traditional homework and worksheets…Works at Student’s Level: The student’s ability to work at their own level and pace allows mastery of each topic before tackling a new skill. Review of previous skills is easy because lessons from kindergarten through 8th grade are included on the CD. Each lesson provides unlimited practice by generating as many problems as required. This allows students to practice until they are confident they have mastered the skill.

This homeschool software could provide younger children with a full math curriculum, and older children with supplement reinforcement of math basics. It’s a great tool to have in your homeschool software learning library.

We are in the development stages of a new homeschool software that will be for record keeping and planning. As a homeschooling family ourselves, we know what we like and use, but we want to hear from you. Please take a few moments and either reply to this post and add your answers below; or feel free to contact us via our Contact Form.

What features would you like to see in a homeschool planning and record keeping software?
If you use a similar homeschool software now (you don’t need to name names ), what are some things you like and dislike about that software’s features?
If you do not currently use a homeschool planning and record keeping software, why don’t you? (i.e., too complicated, too expensive, prefer paper, didn’t know there was such a thing as record keeping and planning software, etc…)
Any other comments you’d like to add that might help in our development process.
